While carol singing, festive decorations, gift giving and exchanging of warm wishes, fill the air, Yuletide is also about yet another indulgence — Christmas cakes. While you may think plum cake is all that Christmas is about, some bakers across the City say that there's more to the festive season than just that.
If you're a plum cake lover, Thom's Bakery at Wheeler Road sells traditional in-house recipe of plum cakes. "We've always focused on plum cakes for Christmas. The regular pastries and cakes too are available during this time but Christmas is about plum cakes," says the owner, Binu P Thomas. The bakery also has sponge and vanilla cakes.
Sabir Mohammed, who's in charge of St Albert Bakery, Frazer Town, says, "We have our almond icing plum cakes at Rs 550 per kg, apart from sponge cakes and banana crepe muffins. Our cakes are absolutely alcohol-free."
V F David, owner of Fatima Bakery at Richmond Town, says, "Apart from the Christmas regulars like sponge and plum cakes, we have black-forest cakes, fruit cakes, rich chocolate cake, fresh cream pineapple cakes, ranging up to Rs 450 per kg, that are much in demand this season."
'Daily Bread' seems to be experimenting with many flavours this season. Praveen Kumar, manager of its Church Street store, says, "People have different tastes. And we have different flavours like caramel, pineapple, black forest, passion fruit, strawberry fresh cream, and luxury cakes like lemon tart for parties and social gatherings, during Christmas."
With people becoming more health-conscious, Nilgiris has launched its California prune plum cake, apart from the cherry, walnut and fruit and nut cakes that they have stocked for the season.
"We've launched quite a few different flavours for this season in our bakery section like Irish coffee, cheesecake, litchi, kiwi and banana pastry. We're also into customising cakes according to the customers needs. The recent one we did was a Christmas bell-shaped cake in pineapple flavour," says A MDurai Murugan, manager, Nilgiris, Brigade Road.
So what are people in the City looking for this season? "I prefer coffee cakes and fruit-flavoured cakes for the season. Since everyone brings plum cakes home, I prefer other flavours," says Abhinav Joseph, a graduate student."We always prefer plum cakes and we spend hours making it at home. The whole family gets involved in the process and that's when the season kicks in," says Margret D'souza, a housewife.
