Australia's first, and the world's tallest, wooden apartment building is currently under construction in Melbourne.

The 10-storey structure, with 23 boutique residential apartments and four townhouses, is due for completion in October this year.

Use of eco-friendly frames

The Australian property and infrastructure company Lend Lease is using cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the construction of the building, called Forte. CLT is an engineered mass timber product that is more environmentally friendly than other frames, says Lend Lease, which adds that by using CLT the project will cut down CO2 emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes as compared to concrete and steel, the equivalent of removing 345 cars off the road.

On a weight-to-strength basis, CLT meets, and in some cases exceeds, the performance of reinforced concrete, resulting in a very stable and durable structure, according to the company.

Currently, the tallest timber residential building in the world is the nine-storey Stadthaus in Hackney, London, which houses 29 apartments and a neighbourhood office on the ground floor. It was designed by architect Waugh Thistleton in collaboration with structural engineers Techniker and timber manufacturers KLH.

Stadthaus is the first high-density housing building using cross-laminated timber panels from the first floor upwards.

It incorporates not only load-bearing walls and floor slabs but also stair and lift cores made entirely from timber.
