Garbage is not the only issue that is bothering Bangaloreans, bad roads laden with potholes are as much a problem. Most of the major roads in the City have huge potholes which can often prove fatal if not mended in time.

A big crater on Amruthahalli Main Road.Citizens suggest various measures that can be taken to make the roads smoother and better for the motorists.

"The government should consider cementing the roads, instead of asphalting them. The carbon and tar coatings on the roads are so thin that by the time it is monsoon, the coating wears off and the situation is back to square one. I feel that the quality of materials used is very poor, hence the roads in the City are full of potholes. It will be beneficial if the government considers cementing the roads on a permanent basis," says Rajesh, an engineering student.

Bad roads also take a toll on the health of motorists, who face back and neck problems, and senior citizens. "Bangalore is the capital of the State and should be on a par with other cities when it comes to basic infrastructure like roads. Roads on the outskirts as well as in the City are in a terrible condition. This leads to more fuel consumption and is very dangerous for motorists and the elderly people,'' informs Dhanyata, who commutes by public transport every day.

Hosur Road, CMH Road, Dollars' Colony Road, off Sarjapur Road, Amruthahalli Main Road, roads in Jayanagar 9th Block, Kasturba Road are some of the roads that are full of potholes and getting worse day by day.

Some say that the condition of the roads is so bad because of the poor quality of the
materials used in construction of the roads.

"The contractors, in order to make money, compromise on the quality of materials. Most roads don't survive for more than two seasons. Monsoon makes the condition all the more pathetic and in a city like Bangalore, it just adds to the traffic woes," says Dhanush, a civil engineering student.

Poonacha, a regular commuter and a professional, who has been staying in the City for a long time now, says, "I am a regular commuter and face difficulties every day while travelling. A lot of time is wasted while commuting due to bad roads and potholes. The problem worsens during the rains," he adds.

K T Nagaraj, superintendent engineer, BBMP informs that the BBMP is mending potholes in nearly all the arterial and sub-arterial roads.

"The arterial and sub-arterial roads amount to around 2,000 kilometres and the work to mend the potholes is going on in four zones now. Palace Road, Vittal Mallya Road, NT Road, Kasturba Road, Amruthahalli, M G Road, Richmond Road, Mahadevpura Road, Race Course Road, Raj Bhavan Road and many others will soon be repaired. The work will get over in a span of 20 days," he explains.
