You could easily miss this tiny little joint on a busy stretch like the Kammanahalli Main Road, but you definitely can't miss the crowd in front of it. Get a little closer and you will find that it's a small coffee joint called Kaapi Goodu that serves authentic filter coffee in addition to a list of mouth-watering items.
The regulars who come to Kaapi Goodu, meaning coffee nest in Kannada, confess that it's the economical price, excellent quantity and the warmth of the owners that have made this place popular with those living in and around Kalyan Nagar.
This little eatery competes with the biggest eating joints located along the same stretch. But people would easily give the big coffee chains a miss if they eat at this place just once. The food is delicious and the coffee, not to mention, is truly filter coffee.
Shreedevi was in a regular job when she decided to quit it and start something on her own to further her passion and interest in food. That is how Kaapi Goodu was born. Everything about the joint has a personal feel to it — the ambience, the little chairs and the smell of filter coffee that you really can't resist.
The joint serves a combination of three idlis with two masala vadas for less than Rs 20 for breakfast, chapati with a sabji and a few rice items — all very reasonably priced. The evening snacks include 'chicken sandwich', 'grilled spinach and corn sandwich', samosa, 'egg puff' and vegetarian and non-vegetarian momos. All this, in addition to biscuits, cakes and sweets. The joint also serves badam milk and tea but their USP is the filter coffee.
Kaapi Goodu is housed in a movable caravan sort of thing that was designed and conceptualised by Shreedevi and her family members. There's just enough space for two people to stand inside but the space has been intelligently used to house a fridge, a microwave oven, an induction cooker, a sink, a milk heater that keeps the milk hot and boiling all the time, and a coffee filter machine. "This was designed by us and we wanted something that we can move around, if necessary. We make sure that the plates and vessels are clean and dry all the time. This is to ensure that everything is hygienically cooked and served. We use only boiled water," explains Shreedevi who wakes up at 4 in the morning to plan the menu for the day.
She says, "The emphasis is to serve home-made food and we wanted to keep the price reasonable because we are targetting office-goers and college students." The coffee powder is sourced from Coorg, "You get instant coffee mixes here but we wanted the original coffee flavour, so we buy the coffee powder from Coorg."
The eatery has more than 100 people who come in for breakfast, coffee and snacks. The regulars say the economical price and delicious food is what prompts them to come back for more. M Prakash, a retired professor says, "The coffee you get here is similar to what is made at home. The samosas and biscuits are excellent evening snacks." Sandeep Viashista, a banker says, "I come here at least three to four times a day only for coffee. It's economical and the snacks are worth a try."
Kaapi Goodu is located at No. 420, M, 'Kaur Ava', Kammanahalli, Main Road, next to Dhanalakshmi Bank. For details, call 8951838434.
