Students no longer shy away from being creative beyond the classroom — these days, they spend equal amounts of time coming up with ideas and projects of their own.
With interest in phone and computer applications increasing, many of them are even trying their hand at coming up with apps of their own.
And it was to celebrate this spirit that the students of the department of information science and engineering, at Sambhram Institute of Technology, recently held a two-day-long android application development championship.
The event, which was meant exclusively for engineering students, was held in association with IIT-Madras. It was preceded by a brief workshop, in which the students were given a few tips on application development.
Students crowded in the college's IT seminar hall as well as the MCA laboratory, where the event was held.
It began with a briefing session — the students were told about the basics of
android applications, and guided on how to code them. After this, the zonal-level championship was held — the participants had to code a new application, which was then reviewed by a panel of judges.
The entire event was put together with the help of some faculty members, as well as student co-ordinators Nagashree, Usha, Kiran, Rekha and Akarsh.
They worked to bring in around 150 participants, who came from all over the state to take part in the championship. Chethan, one of the participants, was thrilled by the entire experience.
He says, "It was a good opportunity to explore the world of android — by practically developing our own project. We were also provided with an android tool kit. Overall, it was quite a great experience."
Some of the other colleges which took part included MS Ramaiah Institute of
Technology, BMS Institute of Technology, GMIT Davangere and others.
The event came to a close with a valediction, at which the principal of Sambhram
Institute of Technology — K Chandrakanth — distributed certificates to all the
participants.
