Mellifluous voices come together

As a part of the 31st Varshikotsav 2012, Sursagar, along with the ICCR, is presenting Hindustani Raga Sangeet by Pandit Venkatesh Kumar followed by Vidushi Girija Devi on November 10, 6 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall. Ravindra Yavagal will be on tabla and Vyasmurti Katti will be on harmonium.

Venkatesh Kumar hails from Bellary. From a tender age, he was strongly influenced by his father, who was a renowned artiste. Impressed by his genuine dedication to Hindustani classical music, Pandit Puttaraj Gawayi took him on as a pupil in his gurukul. After years of rigorous training, Venkatesh Kumar effectively inherited the kirana and the Gwalior gharana singing styles with all its nuances. He has also received a postgraduate degree in music from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Venkatesh Kumar is gifted with a mellifluous, robust and vibrant voice, rich in tradition and deep in devotion. He has performed at all major music festivals in India and has also been invited to perform at the AKKA Kannada Sammelan in Florida. Girija Devi is a senior and renowned Indian female classical vocalist, who represents the Banaras gharana of singers. She is a proficient singer in various different genres of Hindustani vocal music like khyal, thumri, dadra, chaiti and kajari.

But her forte lies in singing the poorab and thumri. She is also called the 'Queen of thumri. Entry to the event is free. For details, write to mail@sursagar.co.in
