Started by K Ramakrishna Prabhu in 1954, New Krishna Bhavan is a family restaurant that focuses on maintaining the quality and flavour of item that it offers.

The food is extremely filling and tasty for the price one pays for it. The Sunday lunch thaali costs Rs 90 but comprises more food than one can consume - holige, poori, rice, sambar, rasam, curd, palya, papad, kootu, kosambari, bajji and even a banana to aid in digestion! A rava idli costs Rs 26, whereas a cup of filter kaapi costs Rs 18.

"Our South Indian thaali and snacks like the green masala idli and rava pongal are the fast-selling items. We also have a lot of special items like Mangalore neer dosa and ragi meal, which the more experimental customers try out," explains Rajashekhar, the restaurant manager.

Interestingly, half the food is prepared in Karnataka style while the other half is made using traditional Tamil Nadu recipes. The other items that it offers range from Gokak jowar dosa and Udupi sevai to Mysore bonda soup and Malabar upma.

People with a sweet tooth can indulge in a daal holige or a bowl of badam halwa or can just pick up a Mysore pak on their way out. For the sake of convenience and to prevent wastage, different rice items are prepared on specific days of the week. Despite that, there are too many options to choose from.

"The food menu has changed over the period of time. Earlier, we only served the basics - idli, vada, dosa, poori and chowchow bhat. Now, there are too many options because the customers demand variety," notes the manager.

When asked about other changes the restaurant has seen over time, he gets nostalgic and shares that there used to be a whole different flavour to the place when there was self-service.

"We had to keep our customers happy so when they told us that they didn't want to wait in a queue for their food, we took a call and started a fully serviced eatery."

The place has its own charm and is a great value for money. The only thing to be kept in mind is that weekends see a lot of rush. So, it just might make sense to plan that family meal as a mid-week treat! New Krishna Bhavan is located on Samipige Road opposite Sirur Park, Malleswaram.
