Bangalore has always prided itself on its style — and the biggest fashion event of the City came to a close this weekend, with the finale of the Metrolife Fashion Show.

Couture was taken to a whole new level as nine college teams — selected across three preliminary rounds — went headlong on the ramp, battling it out in terms of designs, styling and of course, attitude. The result? — an explosion of fashion, the likes of which the City has never experienced before.

Myriad collections took the ramp at Dayananda Sagar Institutions, dazzling the huge crowd which had gathered to watch the show.

Each college did everything they could to stand apart — chic designs, hot accessories, oodles of oomph and everything else that goes into making the perfect fashion show.
An element of glamour was added by the celebrity judges — some of the top names in the industry: designers Prasad Bidapa, Manoviraj Khosla and Sanchita Ajjampur, as well as Sandalwood actress Niveditha.

The show began on an incredible carnival-esque note, with a stint by percussion project Thalavattam. The band put together an impressive display as well as musical performance, with unique instruments, splashes of neon paint and ultra-violet lighting.

The crowd went wild over their performance, which witnessed some innovative instruments made of recycled materials. Mehdi, one of the members of the project, says, "We are trying to make music using re-used materials. The energy levels here at the show was quite incredible — the crowd was looking for something new and fresh, and I think they got what they wanted."

The highlight of the occasion, of course, were the collections that hit the ramp. Each team had to base their display on a fixed theme — 'Colours of Metrolife' — and the different interpretations that were showcased were spectacular.

The show began with the students from CMRIT, who showcased some cutting-edge garments. While the boys stuck to white shirts and camel-coloured vests, the girls went for fitted skirts, slips and single-toned tops.

The girls from Jyoti Nivas College were up next, and they stunned with their perfect ensemble of colours and style. Their neutral, cream-coloured skirts and jodhpurs were brightened up with mosaic patterns in bright pinks, blues and greens — and their strappy, sky-high heels simply added to the style factor.

The students from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering went for a varied collection, with sequins in bright shades of gold and hot pink.

Plenty of shiny fabrics and daringly-cut outfits were modelled by the girls, while the boys stuck to elegant jodhpurs in bright colours. The boys from Acharya Institute of Technology, who were up next, kept things mixed too — while some opted for a dapper look, complete with briefcases and newspapers, others went for something quite daring, like pale jodhpurs paired with fitted blazers and hats. Some sported casual attire, with denim cut-offs and neon green canvas shoes.

The team from Surana Degree College went, once more, for a retro-esque theme with candy-coloured jeans and bright tops.

The girls chose flowing gowns in a series of floral and psychedelic prints. The students of Vogue Institute of Fashion and Technology put together a sparkling display — their garments shone in shades of neon green and pink, with plenty of silver and minute detailing of buildings and skylines which portrayed an urban feel. M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce chose to lay emphasis on their headgear — which were decorated with large feathers — and ripped clothes. One model even sported black, feathered wings.

The creative round of the show came to a close with the team from Garden City College, who went for a fusion of ethnic and contemporary garments — innovative saris, toga-esque drapes in rich colours with metallic embellishments were prominent. They accessorised with glittering pieces of twines wrapped around their ankles and wrists. The students also modelled the clothes of various brands, showcasing some of the hottest trends in the City right now. The brands who were featured included INMARK, Kalanjali, John Players, Flying Machine, Only Jia, People, Brand Factory, Pantaloons and Avirate.

An added bonus were two dance performances — one by the dance team from Mount
Carmel College and the other by the team from Dayananda Sagar Institutions. While the former went for a contemporary, upbeat piece, the latter put up a hip-hop dance which had the crowd cheering. Trupthi, from the Dayananda Sagar team, says, "We love hip-hop and have been dancing for over three years now. We expected quite a good response!"

Ultimately, the team from Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering stole the show and won the first prize, which was a whopping one lakh worth of gift vouchers.
The girls from Mount Carmel College came second, and won Rs 80,000 in vouchers while the team from Vogue Institute of Fashion and Technology came a close third and won vouchers worth Rs 60,000.

The girls from Jyoti Nivas College and Surana Degree College won consolation prizes worth Rs 30,000 each and Garden City College, CMRIT, Acharya Institute of Technology and MS Ramaiah Degree College won vouchers as well.

While Jeffery Ponappa, from Acharya Institute of Technology, won in the best male model category, Rhea Subbaiah from Mount Carmel College emerged as the best female model.
