There was a time when being a son or a daughter of a movie star would get you a direct entry into big-banner films. But over the years, that trend has changed.
Most star kids today have to prove their mettle and fight their own battles at the box office. And that's exactly what Nakshatra, daughter of veteran film-maker D Rajendra Babu and actress Sumitra, faced when she made her entry into movies.
With movies like Gokula in Kannada and Doo in Tamil, she proved to the industry that she is here to stay. Now the actress, much like her mother, has forayed into the Malayalam film industry and is waiting to see how the audience accepts her.
A project that she is really excited about is Vaidooryam, directed by Saseendra K Sanker. She plays a very traditional and mature girl, who learns to fight her own battles in the film. Nakshatra says that not only was the role challenging but she also learnt to overcome her inner obstacles. "I always wanted to be an actress but I was a very shy and reserved person. When I spoke, people sitting next to me couldn't hear me. But through this film, I was forced to open up and come out of my shell.
I'm really proud of my performance and I have my director to thank for as it was he who really encouraged me to give my best," she adds. Calling herself a much bolder person now, Nakshatra says that though she was always a choosy person when it came to scripts, she is now opening up to different kind of roles. But when it comes to Kannada, she still remains selective.
"Frankly, opportunities are few in Kannada films. I don't know why but I haven't come across anything interesting. I want to do roles for which I will be remembered. I have always been choosy here because my family is here and the slightest mistake can affect them. But Ihave taken chances in other industries," she says.
But that doesn't mean Nakshatra has completely kept herself away from the Kannada film industry. In fact, the pretty damsel is wrapping up a Kannada film, which is pegged as her father's directorial comeback.
"I play a very youthful character who likes to enjoy life and hang out with her friends. She is thrilled about dressing up in modern clothes but is forced to wear only Indian attire at home. Working with appa has been a wonderful experience. I learnt so much from him, both on and off the sets. I hope to make him proud with my performance," she sums up.
