A bag of surprises in Ladakh

"The mountains are calling and I must go". It indeed was a calling for us. My daughter took an impromptu decision to travel to the mystic land of Leh and Ladakh nestled in the Greater Himalayas.

On reaching Leh airport, we were given a warm welcome by our tour organisers. After a sumptuous breakfast of idli and vada, we went for a walk and explored the town.

The eight-day trip was well planned by our tour organisers. It included visits to ancient Buddhist monasteries and other significant tourist spots.

The next day, we set out to visit the ancient monasteries of Likir and Lamayuru. Every monastery has an interesting history and exudes the aroma of exotic incense and a lot of interesting items to shop.

The important monasteries we visited are Alchi, Likir, Lamayuru and Hemis. The drive to Lamayuru along the Indus river is quite memorable. Watching it flowing in full spate, frozen at some places, and its sangam with Zanskar river was an exhilarating experience.

The Lamayuru monastery atop the hill is ancient and faces the moon rock landscape (the rocks on that hill resemble the landscape on the moon). We were transported to a totally different world.

The Likir monastery is known for its 1,000-year- old wall paintings. Hemis is the richest monastery with gold paintings which are worth seeing. The alley shopping at Alchi monastery is very interesting. One can buy Tibetan turquoise jewellery, prayer bells and flags, meditation bowl, incense sticks and Buddha statues here.

Next was our unforgettable drive to Khardungla Pass which is the worlds highest motorable road at an altitude of 18,380 ft. It was a dangerously adventurous drive. But there is a sense of great achievement once we reach the top.

A slight snow drizzle welcomed us atop Khardungla. A stay longer than 15 minutes may cause breathing problems because of the altitude.

It is advisable to carry camphor or Vicks inhaler to ease the breathing. All along the way, there was heavy Army presence which gave us a sense of safety.

We travelled down from Khardungla to the sand dunes of Nubra Valley. Surprised? Yes, this is how Ladakh surprises you with a variety of landscapes from snowclad mountains to sandy deserts, a patch of green trees, the mighty Indus river and the blue Pangong Lake. One can enjoy short camel rides and some sporting activities in the sand dunes of Nubra.

The icing on the cake is the great Pangong Lake. It took our breath away. The vast sheet of cobalt blue crystal clear lake looked like a paradise on earth.

The lake changes colour over the day. As we were relaxing on the banks of the lake, a sudden unexpected stormy wind of sand and ice caught us by surprise and we ran for our lives.

It indeed was an adventure. The Pangong Lake has another attraction â€" it was where the film 3 Idiots was shot. We camped at Pangong Lake in cute little tents which were well furnished.

The other places of interest which we visited were Changla Pass (the third highest motorable road in the world), Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Magnetic Hill, The Hall of Fame Museum dedicated to
the Indian Army The Rancho School and the idiotic wall from the film 3 Idiots.

Soon it was time for us to return. When a travel to a dream destination comes true, the feeling in inexplicable. Reluctantly, we packed our bags glancing now and then at the high and mighty Himalayas that was visible from our hotel windows. It was indeed a spiritually enriching experience as well.

Every petty thought or action in our mundane life looks very trivial after visiting such a spiritually rich place. We came back satisfied and with the lingering hope of a second visit.

The joy of having two films one has acted in, running in the theatres at the same time, is something every actor would love to experience. Actor Anupriya Goenka who is revelling in the success of her recent releases Padmaavat and Tiger Zinda Hai, confesses that her career is still at a nascent state. In a candid conversation with Tini Sara Anien, she talks about her latest films and more

Is Rani Nagmati from Padmaavat one of your most celebrated roles?

It is one of my more celebrated roles. The main reason for it is that I got to work with Sanjay sir which was a lifetime experience. The role and he taught me a lot about perseverance.

Who was most fun on the sets of the film?

Everyone belonged to a league of their own. While I didnt have scenes with Ranveer (Singh), I always heard great stories about him. Deepika (Padukone) is an epitome of elegance. She is a no-nonsense person on the sets and one can have lovely conversations with her. Shahid (Kapoor) is a fun person. As a co-star, he is very giving and makes room for others to grow.

Were you stressed when Padmaavat was getting delayed?

It was a tough time for the entire team. We had worked on the film for a long while. Everybody involved with Padmaavat had put their hearts in it. I would always think about what Sanjay sir was going through. We all knew that the movie was a homage to the Rajputs and would make it big.

How exciting is it to have two films in the theatres now?

Its a fantastic feeling. Padmaavat was supposed to release earlier followed by Tiger Zinda Hai. Despite all the chaos, the movies released close to one other. I feel good when people appreciate me for being a part of two big films.

Are there comparisons between your two roles?

Comparisons are good. It is only when roles are compared that one can understand how closely people are watching your work. The emotions, the treatment of the two films and even the subjects were different. I play a vulnerable and honest Poorna in Tiger Zinda Hai and a selfish and cunning Rani Nagmati in Padmaavat. The only thing that is similar is the passion the films were made with.

In your career, which role are you closest to?

From Bobby Jasoos to Paathshala, I relate to each of my characters. But I connect most with Poorna.

Many would remember you for the sensational advertisement you did for Myntra. How challenging was that?

Romancing a girl was a challenge. I had butterflies in my stomach even though I was very sure about doing the commercial from the beginning.

Some directors you would like to work with.

My biggest high is that I have worked with varied directors even though I have a long way to go. I would love to work with Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and so many others. The list is endless.

What is your upcoming project?

I have Maaya with Nagesh Kukunoor coming up. The movie is about a simple, docile and god-fearing girl who wants to become an actor. It has a very bold subject and is a dark film. I always revered Nagesh sir and projects like Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal. The film is a dream come true.

Are you a no-makeup person?

Its been a while since I have stepped out without makeup. I confess one thing, I hate putting on makeup. Thankfully our films now appreciate the natural radiance of a woman, thus good or little makeup is done.

What can bring a smile to your face?

Good conversations.

Actor Arya is known for his impressive performances in Tamil films like Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Naan Kadavul, Madrasapattinam and Raja Rani. He is making his debut in Kannada film industry with Rajaratha which is produced by Ajay Reddy. Arya will also be seen playing interesting characters in his forthcoming projects like Ghajinikanth, Santhana Devan and Sangamithra. He is fond of travelling, cycling and plays football.

"I look forward to weekends as they give me an opportunity to dedicate more time to some of my daily passions --- cycling, working out and football. I cant imagine a day without indulging in any of these activities.

I dont mind being told that I am obsessed with fitness. These three activities help me stay fit in body and mind. There have been weekends when I have cycled to my shoot locations rather than travel by car. This helps me beat the traffic and reach the location faster than a car does. I also cycle to the gym after work. I am used to cycling 300 to 400 km at a stretch. I enjoy pedalling away whenever I have some free time.

If I hadnt become an actor then I would have become a sportsperson because I am that obsessed with playing any sport. I am a hardcore fan of Manchester United F C and Real Madrid. I never miss any of the their matches. When I am home I catch up on all the football matches. I either watch them as and when they are happening or I record the matches and watch them later. My friends and I have formed a small football club and whenever I am home over the weekend, we play a couple of matches.

Theres a school playground in Chennai and thats where we meet and play as well. Swimming is another one of my favourite indulgences. These activities help me build my stamina, boost my confidence and offer a certain mental stability. They also give me the courage to face tough situations.

I am neither a restaurant hopper nor do I like shopping too much. So, my friends and I bond over sports and most of our conversations revolve around fitness.

Work takes up a lot of my time, so whenever I am home after a long shoot, my mother pampers me by making some of my favourite dishes. She knows my tastes and makes exactly what I like which could be anything like Mutton biryani or chicken-related dishes or even fish.

Shes a brilliant cook and can make anything under the sun. I have a sweet tooth and need to have a sweet after every meal. It could be a piece of chocolate or even a small scoop of peanut butter. I dont enjoy eating out. I like eating light when I am shooting or travelling. I like to keep my life simple and straight. There are just a handful of things that I am happy doing. And weekends are reserved for doing them.

A few of my favourite things
Playing football
Cycling
Working out

There was a time when water sports enthusiasts of Karnataka had to go to a distant place to ride the waves. Not any more. On the contrary, people from across the country, and even outside, are visiting the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada to explore places that have emerged as the finest spots for water sports.

There are several beaches in this region that have a great potential for tourism and adventure activities. Right from Someshwar beach near Ullal (in Dakshina Kannada) to Majali beach in Karwar (Uttara Kannada-Goa border), there are more than a dozen beaches that could be the best in the country. Tannirbavi, Panambur, Surathkal, Mulki (in Dakshina Kannada), Kaup, Malpe, Maravanthe (in Udupi), Murudeshwar, Bhatkal, Gokarna and Honnavar (in Uttara Kannada) are a few to name. Besides, rivers such as Nethravathi, Gurupura, Nandini, Shambhavi, Swarna, Udyavar, Seetha, Sowparnika, Chakra, Kali and Sharavathi also offer water sports opportunities.

Unexplored areas

Though Jack Hebner, popularly known as Surfing Swami, started Mantra Surf Club or Surfing Ashram - Indias first surf club - in 2004 in Mulki, and famous people keep visiting the club, the sport came to limelight when Mantra Surf Club organised the first All Cargo Indian Open of Surfing at Sasihithlu beach in 2016.

The competition, recognised by the International Surfing Association and Surfing Federation of India, and supported by Karnataka Tourism Department, saw the participation of over 100 surfers from India and abroad. While surfing is a multi-billion dollar industry abroad, it was virtually unheard of in India until a few years ago. Because of the efforts of Jack and others, coastal Karnataka has emerged as a popular surfing destination today.

Besides surfing, stand-up paddle (SUP), kayaking, bodyboarding, wakeboarding and jet ski rides too have been introduced in some beaches and rivers of the region. Other recognised surfing training institutes in the coastal region include Shaka Surf Club in Kodi Bengre, Udupi, Stoked Surfers Club in Tannirbavi, and the one managed by Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project in Panambur beach.

Amritha Vidyalaya in Mangaluru is collaborating with Mantra Surfing Club to start surfing, kayaking and stand up paddle activities, and to include the same in the school curriculum, said Yathish Baikampady, chief executive officer of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project. He also said that when the plan materialises, it will be the first school in the State, perhaps in India, to include surfing in the curriculum.

Till recently, scuba diving was considered as a foreign sport (even though the Andamans and Goa had the facility). Uttara Kannada district administration facilitated scuba diving in Murudeshwar (Netrani island) last year. Two more places (an island about 8 km from Kaup beach, and Sadashivgad in Karwar) followed suit. Plans are on the anvil to start scuba diving at about 16 km away from Panambur beach in Mangaluru. "A trial run has already been done," said Yathish.

Snorkelling activity is also organised in all these places. Snorkelling is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water with a diving mask and a shaped breathing tube called snorkel.

Uday Shetty of Tourism Department, Dakshina Kannada said that the district administration has given permission to maintain beaches in Panambur and Someshwar to two companies and they can take up any activity on the beaches with appropriate infrastructure and adequate safety measures. He said that plans are also on the cards to start a surfing training centre in Mangaluru.

Anitha of Tourism Department, Udupi said that there is a good response for water sports activities in the district. House boat at the backwaters of River Swarna near Kallianpur too is becoming quite popular, she said.

Safety measures

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district H Prasanna said that some of the beaches including Murudeshwar, Om (Gokarna) and Karwar are safe for water sports. "Due to the existence of islands nearby, tides are normal, following which they are ideal and safe for water sports activities," he said.

Stating that there are three operators in Uttara Kannada for scuba diving, Prasanna said that the district administration has been providing training on life-saving skills, first aid and rescue operations so that the operators are better equipped to handle emergency situations.

"I was thrilled and fascinated to see a different world just 30 feet below the sea surface near Nethrani island. Colourful fish, pelagic fish and coral reefs mesmerised me," said Shivamogga District Information Officer Shafi Saduddin, who recently tried scuba diving at Nethrani island. He is also happy that such a facility is available in the State.

Water sports in River Kali is the most sought-after among the urbanites, and people visit the place for activities like kayaking, speed boat and rafting. Dr Rabindranath Tagore Beach Development and Conservation Committee in Karwar, in association with Leisure Routes in Mangaluru and Uttara Kannada District Tourism Development Committee, has been organising kayaking for tourists.

The kayaking festival organised last year in Dandeli evoked an overwhelming response, with the participation of more than 100 enthusiasts from India and abroad. The route for kayaking is from Siddar to Karwar on River Kali, crossing picturesque locations and tiny islands. There are two island stop overs during the trip. To ensure the safety of riders, life jackets are provided and life guards will also be present. Interestingly, it is not compulsory for the participants to learn swimming for kayaking or scuba diving.

A park, pathway, watchtower, food park and other water sports on the bank of River Kali near Karwar, just before the river joins the sea, are an added attraction for tourists. With Karnataka emerging as a destination for water sports, adventure enthusiasts can head to scenic places this summer to experience the adrenaline rush.

Don't let high heels kill your feet

High heels need no introduction. Adding a few inches to ones heights changes the way a person appears and perhaps adds some more confidence. Women across the world have complained the experience of wearing high heels can be painful. When a person wears heels, due to the inclined nature of the footwear, the body weight shifts towards the front of the feet, and hence the person has to balance the body to stand erect. The natural posture of the body is lost and causes the muscles of the leg, pelvis and back to work overtime try and maintain balance. Abnormal posture and prolonged stress on muscles and bones causes several health problems.

Wearing high heels regularly can cause the muscles and tendons of the ankles to shorten and stiffen, causing a painful condition called Achilles tendonitis.

High heels also impact knees, which support the body to maintain balance in the forward inclined posture, putting extra stress on them. This is especially on the knee cap causing early cartilage degeneration.

Some people develop lower-back pain after prolonged use of high heels. This is because the overused back muscles get cramps and spasms.

As the body pressure shifts to the front part of the feet, it leads to conditions such as forefoot overload and corns and calluses.

One fashion statement can bring about host of health concerns, but there are ways to reduce the effect of heels on life.

Reducing the frequency of wearing heels is the most obvious way of protecting your feet.

Massage your legs everyday and include some stretching exercises in your routine.

Avoid thinner heels, choose wedges to provide more support to your heels.

Goodness of the golden fruit

The pineapple is a herbaceous perennial in nature. The juicy tropical American fruit grows on a short stocky-stemmed plant with sword-shaped spiral leaves. The large fruit has tough, thick, thorny segmented skin, which has to be liberally sliced to reach the edible yellow portion.

The fruit is known for its properties of breaking down protein. The active enzymes - brosmolin and bromelain in the fruit have curing properties; while brosmolin, which is similar to pepsin, relieves dyspepsia, digestive and bile problems, it also heals wounds and scars faster.

A blood purifier, replete in organic acids like citric and maliec acids, pineapple is a good source of dietary fibre. This healthy fruit maintains the alkaline balance of blood and is said to prevent water retention in the body.

The word "pineapple" was first used in reference to the pine cones of the Conifer trees. It was the European explorers who came across the fruit in the Americas, and called them "pineapples", as they resembled pine cones. However, in scientific binomial the word ananas comosus comes from the Tupi word nanas meaning excellent fruit.

In Hawaii, the fruit was cultivated and canned throughout the 20th century. Though canning is a way of preserving it, there is nothing like consuming pineapple in its natural state.

Though the strong aroma of the fruit is a bit overpowering, it is a favourite with Indian cooks! Pineapple can give salads, chats and puddings an interesting twist. A dash of the fruit elevates the simple Indian sweet, sheera to "pineapple pudding", while lightly steamed pineapple pieces along with mangoes and grapes in mildly spiced coconut gravy, forms a side dish for traditional festive fare of the Gowd Saraswat Brahmins.

Put on your thinking caps and invent more dishes with this bounty of nature!

For the love of pastry

The air was heavy with the scent of vanilla, and a whiff of freshly baked goodies wafted along the corridors of the Academy of Pastry Arts in the City on a sultry afternoon. As I entered through the double doors, a class on French pastry was in progress. Steel trays laden with madeleines and croissants reeled me in. Right in the middle of the room, students were gathered around a table surrounding chef Mukesh Singh Rawat, as he poured a glaze on a beautifully baked cake. Students looked on with bated breath as the shiny lime-green glaze coated the cake, dripping along the sides. The chef made it seem so effortless. "See how simple it is?" he exclaimed with a smile on his face, admiring the delicious work of art. But baking is no mean feat. And executive pastry chef Mukesh knows it.

Sweet beginnings

Though his love for cooking is what prompted him to take it up as a career, a snide remark from a colleague during his learning years is what pushed him towards pastries. "I was working in the Indian cuisine section of a five-star hotel when one of the chefs there taunted me saying that since I hailed from Uttaranchal, I can only be good at Indian food. That day, I decided that I would do something different and break the stereotype," he recalls. And what started as an obsession soon became his forte and passion. Having worked at Oberoi Bangalore, he later joined the Taj, worked at Radisson, Claridges in Delhi, and Hilton Chennai. He now trains budding pastry chefs at the Academy of Pastry Arts and competes at international cooking tournaments.

"Earlier, people would find baking intimidating. But now many are drawn to it. People have started experimenting and taking risks in the kitchen. They are more aware of the techniques and ingredients. This is evident, as the number of people enrolling for baking classes has doubled, and the beginners are more enthusiastic about trying new things. This motivates me to innovate in the kitchen as well," he says.

The desserts are not restricted to cakes and ice creams anymore. Souffles, brûlées, sorbets, crumbles, pies and tarts have added that much-needed complexity to all things sweet. "A new dish is invented everyday. We are exploring a variety of flavours and textures. Whether it is the use of savoury ingredients in desserts, or a play of soft and crispy textures, the possibilities are endless. I cannot claim that I know everything there is to know about pastries, as each day is a new discovery. It is a healthy atmosphere for pastry to thrive," he admits.

Flavour files

And the dessert revolution is gathering steam, thanks to all the home-bakers. "The market is open. You dont necessarily have to be professionally trained to make a name for yourself in the food industry. Social media has become that perfect platform for home-bakers. They can post pictures of their creations on Facebook or Instagram and get noticed."

Chef Mukeshs trick to stay ahead in his chosen field is by competing in international tournaments like the World Pastry Cup. "I challenge myself constantly by creating something technically difficult and over-the-top. This one time, I created a Jungle Book theme display. Sugar showpieces take a lot of time, and are also labour-intensive. I had to do several practice runs to get them right. I kept doing trials almost seven months prior to the event to reach a certain level of perfection."

However, outside of the five-star kitchens and pastry competitions, the chef prefers simple, clean flavours, and desserts like tiramisu, kheer and jalebi remain his favourites. Flavours are a key to any good dessert. Keeping them simple always works. But if you are in the mood to do something out-of-the-box, it is best to keep a few pointers in mind. "While experimenting with flavours, first try out different combinations. Think about ingredients that go well with milk chocolate or dark chocolate. A hit of citrus in chocolate is also a good idea. Always try to balance the sweetness with acidity. Sometimes just adding sugar can make a dish too sweet. So dextrose is a better alternative, as it lends a certain freshness to the dish. Jelly, crémeux, mousse, ganache and sponges give you contrasting textures. It is all about finding the right balance to create a perfect symphony of flavours on the plate," he signs off, revealing that his go-to ingredient these days is a pinch of sea salt.

Economics of love

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful girl named Claire. She lived in a little cottage near the woods. No, she didnt know Cinderella or Snow White, in case you are wondering; they were before her time. One day, Claire was pruning her beloved roses when she realised that Valentines Day was just around the corner. "Oh, no!", she moaned. "I am tired of being showered with teddy bears and love poems. If I could get a penny for every pathetic poem, I could be a millionaire in..", her voice trailed off. A gleam came into her eye. Why not, she wondered. If people are so eager to part with their money, why not help them?

And thats how Love Gallery was born. It began in a barn, then grew into a corner shop, then into a chain of glitzy stores that employed hundreds of people. They crafted greeting cards and candy, teddy bears and jewellery. They packaged love and sold it to legions of eager lovers.

Claire went on to marry Voyance, a fine young man. They had two beautiful children, Prudence and Ambition, who carried forward their mothers legacy of love. Today Claire is no more, but come February, the flowers on her grave burst into bloom. Some say that she is smiling in her grave. Others swear they can hear a womans laugh all the way to the bank.

Those who dismiss Valentines Day as crass consumerism are missing the point. True love doesnt create jobs, consumerism does. According to market research, the Valentines Day market in India was estimated at more than Rs 20,000 crore, and is expected to grow further. And that is just online. Not convinced? Read on.

The month of love produces a sharp spike in business, across industries. Disclaimer: This list is not comprehensive and is constrained by the word limit of this article.

Flower vendors, specifically those who sell red roses. On V-day, the price jump of this precious commodity can put even bitcoin to shame. Ms/ Mr/ Messrs Satoshi Nakamoto have a long way to go. In fact, if you are a smart investor, circa November might have been a good time to invest in rose gardens.

Gift shop owners, for whom V-Day is the equivalent of Diwali for mithai shops. Specifically, sellers of candles (red), chocolates (heart-shaped), teddy bears (large) and wine (any kind). Actually, sellers of all things red. And of heart-motif anything.

Jewellery stores, although unverified research indicates that these typically show an increase in business after V-day, when boyfriends/husbands who had forgotten V-day are in the market for guilt jewellery, pun intended. Smart jewellers offer discounts on V-Day, but hike up the prices soon after. Guilt > love to loosen purse strings.

Beauty salons that promise a "magical glow" for "that important day in your life". Gender equality is the topic du jour, so it is appropriate that mens grooming companies have a field day too.

Restaurants/cafés/lounges, especially those that offer V-day packages and a romantic ambience. Even the roadside vendor who sells 99 varieties of masala dosa tries to get hold of red umbrellas and plastic chairs, if nothing else.

Multiplexes that screen sigh-inducing mush. Flop movies see a brief revival too. Flop movies = empty theatres = easily available corner seats = assured privacy. Elementary, my dear Watson.

Hotels and resorts who were in the doldrums thanks to Airbnb. V-day gives these businesses a much-needed shot in the arm.

TV channels that fall over themselves to offer the perfect mush fest for stay-at-home-revellers. Comedy, romedy, dramedy, take your pick.

This is the age of click-and-buy, with one in three people choosing to buy online. V-Day does its civic duty by helping to increase the valuation of already over-valued e-commerce sites and win another gazillion dollars in the next round of funding.

Different "adult" products that see a rise in hope-driven business in the run-up to V-day. Advertising for some of these products has recently been banned from prime-time television, to arrest the rampant spread of corruption-by-Western-civilisation. For the same reasons, these products cannot be named by respected newspapers.

Counsellors, who scramble to cope with a sudden influx of the lovelorn. Like the rise of respiratory allergies in some months, February sees an increase in "loveria" cases. Unfortunately, there is no cure; one can only manage the symptoms and pray that this too, shall pass.

Then there are those who dont necessarily gain employment, but derive a sense of purpose from V-Day. Indeed, some of them owe their very existence to the festival of lurve:

The outraged parent (usually, but not always, the father of the girl).

Outraged junta, if the couple in question belong to different communities. Then the intensity of fury is inversely proportional to the closeness of the relationship, which means that the most incensed person will not even have met the couple. Outrage for hire, anyone?

The thwarted lover. This segment contributes heavily to the earlier categories in this list - flowers, teddy bears, jewellery, et al, with the quantum of contribution increasing in direct proportion to desperation level, but with little correlation to said thwarted lovers own financial state. The unofficial V-Day handbook for thwarted lovers says, "Thou shalt beg, borrow or steal, but thou shalt inundate the object of thy affection with objects of affection."

The culture guardians who pick up cudgels, literally or "literarily", to protect one group or another from corruption-by-Western-civilisation. While there are generalists in this field, many have chosen areas of specialisation. For some it is community, others are roused into action by same-sex couples, and still others are very generous in their tolerance as long as a certain kind of meat is not consumed. The best part? All signs indicate that this is a growing field and will resist the job-destroying spread of automation. Casualties of Brexit or Trumps war against H1B1 quotas, fear not. There will be jobs aplenty in your homeland; qualification no bar.

So does that mean Valentines Day is just another product of marketing genius? Perhaps not. Just the other day, my almost three-year-old nephew looked up at his mother and chirped, "I love you, mama." Just like that. The words come naturally to him, as well as to his mother, who tells him regularly that she loves him. There are many like her. This is an interesting shift, as verbal expressions of love within the family tend to invite either embarrassed snorts or derisive lectures beginning with "In our time…" But people have started taking the idea of celebrating love, and expanding the circle it includes. It is not uncommon to see children buying red roses for their mothers, friends meeting for dates and family members greeting each other with hugs on Valentines Day. If this commercial holiday has made it fashionable to express love for the people who matter most in our lives, maybe thats not such a bad thing after all.

Discover the power of omega-3

Omega-3 is a type of fatty acid found in fish, oils, and seeds, offering several health benefits. From preventing cancer, heart disease, and arthritis, to lowering the risk of depression and dementia, omega-3s make for a vital nutrient. Lets take a look at how omega-3s benefit people across age groups:

Infants & pregnancy: Women should include these fatty acids in their diet, either in the form of supplements or consume foods rich in omega-3s before and during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. Omega-3s consist of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), of which DHA is essential throughout pregnancy and in the early stages of an infants life. Pregnant women can obtain adequate omega-3 fatty acids from vegetable oils, low-mercury fish, and fish oil. DHA is essential to ensure optimal development of foetal brain, eye, immune and nervous systems.

Children & teens: Omega-3 has the ability to influence everything from your childrens mood to their academic performance. It improves attention, focus and behaviour. It can even help reduce hyperactivity in kids under 12.

Young adults: According to studies, people who eat fatty fish twice a week are at a lower risk of heart diseases. Omega-3s also seem to alleviate risk of several cancers. Omega-3 oils are effective in the treatment for schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. Omega-3s can resolve skin conditions, painful menstruation and Crohns disease.

Elderly: Omega-3 fatty acids keep the heart rhythm steady, and consumption of fish and fish oil can slow down arteriosclerosis. Fish oil reduced the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and cut down the risk of dementia. Fish oil - in combination with calcium and primrose oil - is a good way to boost bone density in people with osteoporosis.

No more fertility woes

Infertility is on the rise among couples in India. Statistics indicate that this condition affects about 10% to 14% of the Indian population. Among many factors responsible for infertility, particularly among women are stress, unhealthy lifestyle, and a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

About 20% to 25% of the women in India in the childbearing age suffer from PCOS, shows a study. Those with PCOS have been found to have higher than normal insulin levels. This increase in the level of insulin can make the ovaries produce more male hormones like testosterone. Such women therefore struggle with weight issues and excessive hair growth, complicating the disorder further.

PCOS & infertility

PCOS causes the development of cysts, as the ovaries are unable to release eggs on time. Because of this, the follicles keep growing and form multiple cysts, which appear like a string of pearls. Women, whose mother or sister suffers from PCOS, are likely to develop the condition.

Lets look at the symptoms of PCOS:

Weight gain

Fatigue

Excessive hair growth & thinning hair

Infertility

Acne

Pelvic pain

Headaches

Sleep problems

Mood swings

Young women with PCOS tend to experience irregular periods or amenorrhoea, and heavy or scanty bleeding during their menstrual cycles. PCOS can also put women at risk of other health complications such as hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety, depression, sleep apnoea, heart attack, diabetes and endometrial, ovarian and breast cancers.

Treatment & management

Although this condition cannot be cured, it can be managed through other treatment options. The treatment is tailored according to symptoms, other health problems, and whether the woman wishes to conceive. A new procedure is making it easier for women with PCOS to conceive without having to use the hormone injections and endure the associated side effects.

The procedure, called IVM or in-vitro maturation, involves maturing eggs in the lab before implanting them into the womb lining, rather than in the ovaries. In an IVM cycle, the ovaries are not stimulated with drugs. On the contrary, a scan is carried out to study the resting follicles in the ovaries and the same needle used for an IVF egg collection is used to go through the top of the vagina. This needle then helps in draining these tiny follicles. Further, the immature eggs are taken out of the ovaries, and matured in the lab for about two days. Once this is done, the procedure is the same as an IVF cycle, where the matured eggs are transferred back. Although not used extensively in India currently, IVM can help avoid complications and pain for women wanting to bear a child. It also costs significantly lesser than IVF.

In a traditional IVF procedure, women inject themselves with hormone medications for eight to 10 days. This helps in stimulating the ovaries into producing multiple eggs for fertilisation and increases the chances of creating healthy embryos to transfer into the uterus. However, this can be risky for women with PCOS, as they stand the chance of developing ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS), wherein the ovaries become swollen and painful. Therefore, IVM is slowly becoming the preferred mode of treatment for women with PCOS.

In conclusion

PCOS can be managed through exercise and a healthy diet, which in turn will regulate the menstrual cycle and lower blood glucose levels. Additionally, the following tips can help:

Consume foods that are high in fibre such as broccoli, cauliflower and spinach. Include nuts like almonds and walnuts in your meal and eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like soy, salmon, chia seeds and flaxseed.

Have five small meals instead of three big meals, as this will help smooth metabolism and weight management.

Indulge in physical activity for about 30 minutes a day, five days a week to reduce or maintain a reasonable weight.

Couples, young and old, now have an amazing option of rekindling their romance by approaching it in a healthy way. Bonding over exercises is the latest trend that has taken hold of love birds, who have found a perfect way to spend time together.

Strengthening relationships, understanding each other in a new space and working towards the common goal of fitness has been a positive phenomenon. Fitness works at an individual level, which then reflects through a good intellectual, corporal and emotional health, thus forging strong relationships.

Working out with your partner often sets a routine and by commuting together you consciously take efforts not to skip classes.

Better communication: Shunning all the electronic devices and interacting in a relaxed environment improves communication. Spending quality time everyday is a great way to better any relationship.

Good food: A healthy diet and a pleased belly makes everyone calm and rejuvenated. Keep your gut healthy by opting for organic and fresh ingredients. A healthy gut also ensures perfect intimacy with increased enthusiasm and participation.

Twos fun: Working to achieve a desirable body and an improved inner and outer strength can make you happy. When couples exercise together, its a new experience, which is bound to improve and restore their relationship.

Renewed friendship: Spending quality hours and attaining goals of a healthy mind, body and soul is a wonderful way of adding moments of fun in a relationship. The partners are not just supportive and encouraging about each others targets, but they also make for good company in the journey towards achieving those goals. An individual fitness regime or couple working out together, all make way for them to interact more often. It also makes way for healthy conversations since each of them is in a cheerful
mood.

Happiness: A vigorous body and an active mind achieved after exploring new potential and stamina is pure bliss. And when your partner is equally lively, happiness knows no bounds. Food historian and archaeologist Kurush Dalal grins when I ask him about aphrodisiacs: "Actually, there is no aphrodisiac in foods. Shilajit (a sticky substance found in the Himalayas meant for increasing libido), you may argue, but nothing really works. There are no magic pills, though we have been surrounded with stories since ancient times," he tells us.

Did you know the Germans wouldnt grow potatoes and the Europeans kept away from the love apple? Now, they consume it extensively!

"Closer home, according to Ayurveda, any food that is tamasic in nature - like meat, alcohol, tobacco, onions, garlic, fermented foods, such as vinegar, and stale leftover food, contaminated or overripe substances - is heavily responsible for sexual arousal. For example, onion and garlic," he adds.

It is interesting to note that aphrodisiacs are not restricted to the sexual plane. They are emotion triggers. Dalal leaves us with some interesting ingredients for love potions: "From dried rhinoceros horn, to rendered fat of the monitor lizard and even the sweat from a white horse, the ingredients were specific. While some potions were meant to make the wife more attractive to the husband, others were meant to repel the husband from other women."

Chef Larry Paul, head and brand chef at British Brewing Company in Mumbai, says, "Certain foods, by nature when consumed stimulate the mind and body. While innocent looking, they contain certain chemicals that boost your hormone levels, thereby putting you in the mood. There are lots of ingredients that are linked to aphrodisiacs from the Greek and Roman times. For example, aniseeds were considered aphrodisiacs! Even the Mayan civilisation worshipped the cacao tree. Lesser known fact, the Middle East used to consider carrots as aphrodisiacs. On the other hand, history also says Tibetan monks were forbidden from entering temples if they had consumed garlic, since it is an aphrodisiac!"

Love drug

Chef Ishaanee Haware from The Koffee Works in Mumbai says, aphrodisiacs date back to the era of goddess Aphrodite. "She is usually clothed in Archaic and Classical art and wears an elaborately embroidered band across her chest, which held her magic powers of love, desire, and seductive allurement. According to Homer, She inspired love and lust among the gods and mortals. And all the creatures that live on land or in the sea."

Dessert trends

The latest trend predictions for 2018 is using flowers like roses or orchids to enhance flavours of dishes: "think a rose-infused syrup for dessert, candied rose or candied orchid garnish - the possibilities are endless," says Chef Boo Kim of One Street Over and Bastian in Mumbai.

Heres a list of ingredients in your kitchen that will do the deed too:

Hot chillies

Say yes to chilli peppers, for they raise the spice levels in your food, as capsaicin boosts testosterone levels and increases sex drive in men.

Strawberries

As one of the most popular aphrodisiacs, the heart shape and the red colour are what add to the appeal of strawberry as a love food. This is probably why the Romans held the fruit in high regard as a symbol for the goddess of love, Venus. Nutritionally, strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which helps promote blood flow all through the body. And staying healthy is always sexy!

Asparagus & avocado

Asparagus and avocado are rich in Vitamin E know to stimulate the production of sex hormones in both sexes. Go green!

Chocolates

The effect of love and chocolates is all about a chemical spark. Chocolate contains tryptophan, a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal, as well as phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, is released in the brain when people fall in love. And, thus, theres no reason why you must not have it regularly.

Bananas

Shaped as the phallic, the fruit is a source for certain vitamins, including potassium and vitamin B that leads to the production of hormones. This one is one of the most popular of aphrodisiacs.

Oysters

Casanova, the 18th century lover who used to breakfast on 50 oysters, was right. In 2005, a team of American and Italian researchers analysed bivalve molluscs and found them to be rich in rare amino acids that trigger increased levels of sex hormones.

Pomegranates

The pomegranate is the culinary symbol of Aphrodite in Greek history. Some say the forbidden fruit of the Bible was not apple at all, but a pomegranate.

Honey

Bees make honey through pollination and this is considered a symbol of procreation. We all know about the popular birds and bees saying! Historically, the origins of the word "honeymoon" can be traced to mead, an alcoholic beverage prepared from honey that was consumed by newly-weds till the first moon of their marriage for a happy, fruitful union. Nutritionally, honey contains boron, which regulates production of oestrogen and testosterone levels in the body and also provides a natural energy boost.

Figs

A classic case of an aphrodisiac due to its shape, figs are energy power houses and rich in amino acids. Their texture and fragrance are known to have sensual effects on eaters.

The enduring power of a low bun

$

In the admittedly small taxonomy of buns, the topknot, or the high bun, is the bun that tends to hog the spotlight. "Look at my hair!" it screams, perched like a papal crown. Its the universal symbol of ballerinas; of young starlets parading their sex appeal; of flight attendants going for a vaguely retro look; of a certain brand of self-consciously sensitive bro.

If its rare to see a person over a certain age wearing a topknot, its because it conveys a certain uncouth youthfulness, a sense of unseriousness, a need to provoke. In this regard, another bun - the low bun, with hair wound into a spiral or folded into a loop - might seem its polar opposite. In ancient China, the style was adorned with flowers or jewels, and while considered a status symbol, it was also thought to be matronly, literally - a look worn only by married women. In the United States, there were many decades when the low bun was associated with a decidedly practical, puritanical, even schoolmarmish look.

In recent years, though, the low bun has been reclaimed, just as a certain kind of womanhood has: Why should looking like a wife or mother (or a woman who simply needs her hair out of her face) have a negative connotation? Who says its not sexy, or better yet, commanding? In a modern context, the low bun - worn loose or tidy, hastily done or carefully coiffed - is a shortcut to elegance, conveying not stuffiness or seriousness so much as a hint of refreshing formality: sleek, chic and versatile, feminine without being fussy, drawing attention to the face without requesting attention outright. In an age in which having a signature uniform conveys both style and ambition, a suggestion of having better things to do, the low bun is the fail-safe solution.

If eyeglasses are a quick code for "smart," the low bun, sometimes known as a chignon, has become the equivalent for "sophisticated" - but unlike, say, the French twist, it offers the added benefit of not making you look like youve tried too hard. The low bun looks good on everyone, and its also eminently achievable.

It's a date!

What to wear on a date? Its a dilemma that we have been trying to solve for decades now. Sure, to some, it sounds like a no-brainer, but when it gets down to the wire, we all experience some form of first date wardrobe panic, when the dress to impress pressure is on.

The start of a new year inevitably brings with it an entire gamut of fashion trends to try to get ahead of. This years trends are truly heading for more and more comfort; fashion is retaining its sense of fun, its colour and glamour, always with a sense of determination and self-assuredness. In short, this season, its all about celebrating the individuality of style through the multitude of trends waiting to be worn.

Some of the must-follow trends for women include check print, fringe, structured suits, stand-out pieces in the Pantone colour of the year - ultra violent, ensembles in red, floral midi dress. For men Id have to say colour block, athleisure, loose tailoring, black, navy, dark denims and graphic tees.

Here are some of my dos and donts for both, men and women to bear in mind while dressing for a date:

Always check out the venue online to get a feel for the setting. A great rule of thumb to bear in mind while dressing for your date: choose a colour or outfit that you are often complimented on and make sure your look is classy and sophisticated.

Comfort should be your first priority. The last thing you want to do is fidget with your outfit - there are more important things to be thinking about.

If it is a lunch date, wear a nice flowy and easy dress with some sort of jacket; depending on your style - a cropped bomber, a cardigan, a denim jacket is always a great outfit combination. You can do flats or wedges based on the setting and what you are most comfortable in. The ultimate goal is to achieve the effortless I just threw this on vibe.

And if it is a dinner date, wear a nice top with jeans and heels. Stand out on a more formal occasion by adding a statement piece of jewellery or a fun accessory as a conversation starter. Dont be tempted to wear anything that you cant walk in, eat in, or breathe in!

Pick one best asset to show off and thats it. Do you have great arms? Wear a strapless maxi dress. Great legs? Wear a skirt. The bottom line - too much skin can actually be a turn off and look like you are trying too hard. Balance is key - if you wear something short, balance that out with long sleeves and a low heel. If you decide to wear something backless or low cut in the front, wear it with a maxi skirt or jeans. Wear something that fits you! It shouldnt be too loose or oversized - something that shows off your figure but isnt too tight.

Avoid extremes such as overly trendy outfits or heavy make-up. Natural and minimal is always best to nail your date look. Dont dumb down your style for a stranger, but simplify your favourite silhouettes. Toe the line between sexy and boring. Dont overthink and
complicate your outfit with un-necessities.

Wear what makes you feel good. If you feel good in what you are wearing, it will show. Wear something that truly makes you feel like the best
version of yourself. Because when you do that, you will have more confidence. And the more confidence you have, the more you will smile, the more you will engage and chances are, the more dates you will end up having.

Please pay attention to the colours you wear. Black is tempting thanks to its flexibility, but often looks too stuffy and formal; dark grey, however, offers a chic and complementary option in its place. If you want a sharp look that cuts the mould, navy is the year-round colour of choice for dapper men. Navy pairs with almost any other colour exquisitely. Darker, solid colours makes one look neater and sharply dressed.

Kicking things off in a less formal setting means you are in luck. But while it may be in a casual environment, this isnt a hall pass for wearing joggers and a t-shirt. Its about looking pulled together in a head-to-toe ensemble that exudes an air of confidence, but with a cool, calm and collected vibe. And it is also important to feel comfortable with what you are wearing while conversing with your date from across the table, too.

For a casual, coffee date, wear a jacket with a t-shirt paired with jeans and white sneakers. Dark denim works well all year round, but is offset with pastel shirts or nautical jackets nicely. Pay close attention to your wallet, watch or backpack to make sure your outfit works seamlessly together; its all in the details.

If it is a lunch date, wear pastel coloured t-shirt or a shirt with jeans and espadrilles. Theres something refreshing and wholesome about pastel blue or pink, and this is an ideal summer colour palette that is fresh. And if it is a dinner date, wear a formal shirt with pants and loafers.

Grooming

Why go to all that effort to create an excellent outfit if you havent covered all the bases? Not grooming correctly can be a complete put off. No cologne is a happy mistake. Too much cologne is a problem. Apply cologne an hour before you leave the house, and only use a small amount. You dont want to overdo it.

Less is always more; that goes for your jewellery and accessories. Too much sends a desperate try-hard signal, and wont give off the same cool air of sophistication that a more minimal choice can.

While many men fear the embarrassment of turning up to a date overdressed, I promise you that your date will appreciate the oversight. What wont be appreciated is if you turn up and havent put in the effort to groom yourself or dress appropriately - avoid ripped jeans as it seems too casual, printed t-shirts, shirts and slippers.

Do or Diet?

Q: I am 23 years old, and my BMI is 21.6. I have extra fat in key areas of abdomen, thighs and gluteal region. What changes should I make in my diet to cut down on this excess fat? - Sadhika Sultu

Your BMI is normal. So to lose fat from the particular areas, start doing workouts and target on those areas.

Exercise regularly. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking should do the trick.

Avoid refined, fried and processed foods.

Drink plenty of water - at least eight to nine glasses a day.

Include whole grains and dairy products in your diet.

Q: I am 20 years old, and extremely thin. My current weight is 42. I am not into fitness, and as I live in a hostel, I generally just have three meals a day. I eat soaked raisins and almonds first thing every morning. And I also eat two bananas or any fruit every day and consume sprouted green gram every three days. What should I eat to gain weight naturally? - Swathi Sathish

To increase your weight, keep consuming the foods that you have already included in your diet.

Include more energy-dense foods in the form of nuts like almonds, walnuts and peanuts.

Consume high-fat dairy like whole milk, full-fat yogurt, cheese and cream.

Cook with oils like olive oil and avocado oil.

Increase the intake of your chapatis/roti to two.

Include pulses like rajma, chole and lobia in your diet.

Q: I am 20 years old and no matter what I eat, I fail to gain weight. I dont look healthy. None of my outfits fit me perfectly, and Im always asked to wear full clothes so that I look a little well built. I cant eat a full meal at one go. I start feeling bloated after a few mouthfuls. And when I feel hungry
after a while, I gorge on sweets or junk food. Please suggest some healthy eating habits. - Srishti Nayak

You might be eating enough but your portion sizes and food choices may not be appropriate, thus failing to help you gain weight. Its fine if you are unable to eat a full meal. You can break them into short, frequent meals and include calorie and protein-dense foods like bananas, besan preparations, butter, eggs, chicken (in case you are non-vegetarian), nuts, sprouts, potatoes etc. Instead of munching on junk food or sweets, which can further aggravate the bloating as seen in your case, try sheera, milkshakes, cheese/paneer sandwiches, baked cutlets, creamy soups, smoothies, peanut butter, raisins, quinoa etc. These are nutrient dense and would help you gain weight gradually. Include buttermilk or lassi with meals in case you still feel bloated.

Q: I am getting married in a couple of months. I dont want to be a traditional bride. Im 28 and 5 ft 6. Im slightly on the heavier side. I love checkered sarees. How can I incorporate that print and create an elegant yet modern look? - Naina

Checkered trends are both inspiring and interesting with patterns that really flatter the figure and control the gaze of the eye. Combine sarees with shrugs, jackets, sleeveless overcoats with belts that accentuate your waistline. Wearing prints and patterns is supposed to be a fun part of getting dressed, so incorporate these in your saree.

Q: My best friend is getting married soon. I love Kanjeevaram sarees, but I am a little uncomfortable because of my height. Im 25 and I have an hourglass figure. I want to pair traditional pants with a contemporary top. Can you also suggest accessories for the outfit. - Mallika

Brocades! Brocades! Rich in zari and pattern. A brocade slim-fit pant with a sheer dressy top, complemented with traditional gold Mughal jewellery is the look thats going to rock weddings this season.

Q: I am 5 ft 8 and slim. I have trouble finding clothes that match my height and weight. Either they are too long or too short (especially maxi dresses and skirts). What should I do? Buying bigger-sized clothes and getting them altered is cumbersome. - Geetika Dev

Never let anyone or anything put your style in a box. When you give your style parameters, you set boundaries for yourself too. To give your body balance, team an oversized garment with a belt to your natural waist. Tall women look especially great in jumpsuits. To create balance, you might want to try one that has a lower neckline, to provide a counterweight to your long legs. To make pants that are too short seem intentional, make a small cuff and add a strappy heel. Average height of an Indian girl is 5 ft 5 so, try international online brands like ASOS, Gap, The Limited, and Alloy or have clothes custom made.

Q: I am 21 years old and I will be embarking on my professional journey soon. I am looking to update my wardrobe so that I dont look like someone who is just out college. What are some of the wardrobe essentials? - Jamuna

Every professional woman must have a power suit. No professional wardrobe is complete without one or two reliable blazers that you can pair with everything from cropped straight-leg pants to your favourite pencil skirt to a no-fuss sheath dress. Heels also play a major role in professional attire, but comfy shoes are equally important. To round out your professional wardrobe, a statement handbag and some jewellery is a must.

Barely a few months old, Wanderers - Craft Brewery and Artisan Cafe, located on 80ft Kalyan Nagar, takes food lovers through a journey of sorts. The experience is a fulfilling one.

Enter the restaurant and the first thing that strikes you is the beverage counter thats designed to resemble the deck of ship. But thats not all, theres a compass (similar to the ones carried by travellers) that shows you where you are and which direction you should to head to.

Theres also an entire glass wall that has been designed to resemble a sea, so those who are seated in the restaurant will get a feeling that they are on a ship and looking out into the open sea complete with fishing nets and a sunset in the backdrop.

"There are three service areas. The ground floor is called Wanderers of the Seas, the first floor is Wanderers of the Land and the top floor is called Soaring into the Skies. Every floor has been given a definite character. Theres a lot of thought and imagination that has gone into designing the interiors because we want to enhance the social bonding among the people who come here," explains Kiran Reddy, chief executive of Wanderers Brewing Private Limited.

He also points out that the music changes from one floor to another. "While the ground floor is perfect for families and those who want to grab a bite over a quick meeting, the second floor is dedicated to young people because it has provision for live bands, theatre, and stand up comedy. "The entire space is acoustically treated to absorb and isolate sound to enhance its quality indoors and not to disturb the neighbours." The retractable roof is another unique feature," he adds.

The menu has the choicest of dishes from seven continents and every dish comes with a recommended pairing of beer.

"Of the 120 odd micro breweries in India, ours is one of the three German micro breweries. We brew authentic craft beers, German style and our in-house brewer is a German with over 40 years of craft brewing experience," says Kiran. He says that the idea is not only to offer different kinds of crafted beer but to take people through an experience.

The menu is divided into different sections. The appetisers include an interesting mix like Liver Peppers which is tossed chicken or mutton liver with pepper and onions; paprika and lemon aioli and choice of bread.

The Mexican Chimichanga which is Mexican corn tortilla with fajita Grilled vegetables, cheese, guacamole, with home-made dip, is a good beginning to a lavish meal.

"The Mexican Chimichanga has been added because it is a popular street food in Mexico. The flavour is slightly tweaked to suit the local taste," says Kiran. He recommends Italian cottage cheese bruschetta which is flavoured cottage cheese with Italian spices on warm baguette with melted mozzarella cheese. "Our breads are not the regular ones but are especially made for us,"he adds.

A couple of other dishes such as Australias Meat Pie which is a crunchy pie with meat mince with aromatic spices and Thailands Satay which is Oriental style marinated Chicken grilled, with peanut dip are a must-try.

"Some of the like these have been included because they are the popular food of that region,"adds Kiran. Theres also an enticing range of Burgers, Sandwiches and Pizzas--- all tweaked to perfection.

The menu for the Indian section has been tastefully put together to represent the geographical taste of each region.

Among them the Ajwani Machi kebab which is Ajwani flavoured fish kebabs served with mint chutney, Amritsar Machi which is spiced king fish served with mint chutney and Assams ghost chilli chicken balls which is mashed potato, corn and chilli balls spiced with chillio beans tossed in Asian sauce are good starters. A few dishes like Goan fried Prawn balchao, Chicken Chettinadu and Andhra Chilli Chicken are region specific and the best of the lot, says Kiran.

The restaurant is located at No 417, 7th Main Road, 2nd Block, HRBR Layout.

Being the bad guy on screen

Actor Yashwanth Shetty is remembered for his outstanding performance in Jwalantham. He believes that his character there opened the doors to more challenging roles. Yashwanth, who goes by the character name of Maanja in Guru Deshpandes Samhaara, says that he couldnt have asked for a better role.

The actor says that he thoroughly enjoyed being someone that he is not. "At the core, Maanja is a soft-hearted guy but how and why he takes on a cunning avatar forms the crux of the story. The circumstances that led to the change is interesting because the character is realistic with nothing pretentious about him," explains Yashwanth. He states that his body language and mannerism convey a lot of emotions.

"Why a simple man turns a traitor and how is able to sustain the change will offer some interesting moments for the audience to cherish," he adds. The actor says that he has enjoyed playing negative characters.

"After the hero, heroine and comedians in any film, the actor who plays negative roles garner the most eyeballs. A hero usually gets to do only a limited number of films in a year but the actor who plays the villain gets to work on more films. Also, people are easily drawn to negativity. I have always felt one with all my characters and every role has helped me discover a new facet of my personality," adds Yashwanth.

The actor believes that his strong background in theatre and experience on the stage has helped him understand and emote his characters well.
